Le Lubéron
The Hill Towns to the East: Isle-sur-la-Sorgues,
Gordes, Cavaillon, Ménérbes, Rousillon, Lacoste, Bonnieux, Oppéde le Vieux,
are France's Garden of Eden. Here the color of streamwater defies description; we'll call
it iridescent turquoise. By locals, its hills are called "Le Petit Colorado".
Bonnieux, Gordes, Ménérbes... all are quintessential Provençal hill towns that evoke a
"Wow!" at first site.
Further north, villages with mountain streams cascading into medieval wash houses, ancient
papermills, gushing springs, brilliant red and ocher cliffs, prehistoric sites. From there
it is only a short hop to the Mediterranean, secret pirate coves where brigantines laid in
wait for their prey, and the island they all feared, the prison lair of the Count of Monte
Christo and the "Man in the Iron Mask", the infamous Chateau D'If.
I like the contrasts of Provençe, and I hope you will too. On this theme you see the
contrasts of Provençe, expressed in a wide dimension of color. We then return to my
"Maison de Ville" (The Parish House) having viewed landscapes that are both
thought-provoking and relaxing. The Tours are meant for the soul that needs healing and
seeks simplicity, variety, and independence. Our style is simple: whitewashed monastic
walls unencumbered by decorations.
Sometimes the hot water runs out, in which case, you have to wait; this is meant to
increase your ability to philosophize. Sometimes the neighbors stare into your window, in
which case you close your shutters. You sample France from a residential perspective, in a
relaxed manner.
If panorama can help you relax, then the Lubéron tour is your kind of bucolic atmosphere,
with the Abbey of Sénanque, the colors of Rousillon, and the hill towns that Peter Mayle
frequented. There are no timetables to meet at The Parish; you don't have to be at the
curb with your bags waiting for a tour bus to take you to the next hotel; you dictate your
own pace, pretty much.
You wouldn't be the first to skip a Day Trip and instead sit, with a glass of wine, and
watch the swallows play on the wind currents of the Palace walls... until the yellow-gold
sun turns into that purplish twilight only Vincent was able to portray.
